Need to produce graduates who can work on their own terms: PU VC

Lahore: (Saturday, November 8, 2025): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has said that universities must produce graduates who can meet market demands and work on their own terms. He was addressing the closing ceremony of “Hailey Research Week” organized by Punjab University Hailey College of Commerce. On this occasion, PU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, College Principal Prof Dr Hafiz Zafar Ahmad, Chairman of the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Farukh Amil, representative of the Chinese Embassy Li Haoteng, faculty members, researchers, and a large number of students attended the event. In his address, Prof Dr Muhammad Ali said that students still seek degrees merely to get jobs, but it is now time for universities to take steps to change this mindset. He emphasized that every student should actively participate in co-curricular activities, and students involved in dramatic societies also deserve encouragement. He added that students participating in welfare work and internships should be awarded academic credit. He noted that students learn more from such practical engagements, where successful individuals share their experiences, than from classroom instruction alone. Congratulating the organizers for holding an excellent event, he expressed hope that students would apply the lessons learned here in their professional lives. Speaking on the occasion, Farrukh Amil said that young people should focus on entrepreneurship instead of seeking jobs. He shared that the organization had introduced a new digital system allowing online submission of complaints. Prof Dr Hafiz Zafar Ahmad thanked the participants and said that such activities would continue at HCC to promote students’ creative abilities.
